Garlic Butter Rice: Easy 15-Minute Side Dish

  • Author: maria_scott
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A quick, savory, and aromatic side dish made by toasting jasmine rice in butter and garlic before simmering in broth. This recipe transforms simple ingredients into a rich, fluffy, and comforting meal in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 4 tablespoons (56g) unsalted butter
  • 45 medium cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1.5 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse 1 cup of jasmine rice in a fine-mesh strainer under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. Drain well.
  2. Heat a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat and add the butter. Let it melt completely until it foams slightly but does not brown.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and stir constantly for about 30 seconds until fragrant and slightly golden. Do not let it burn.
  4. Add the rinsed rice to the pan and stir to coat every grain in the garlic butter. Toast for 2-3 minutes until the edges of the grains look translucent.
  5. Pour in the broth, salt, and pepper. Stir once to combine and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15-18 minutes without lifting the lid.
  7. Remove from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes to allow moisture to redistribute.
  8. Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not skip rinsing the rice to prevent stickiness. Ensure the lid fits tightly to trap steam during simmering. If using basmati rice, reduce broth to 1.25 cups. For a vegan version, substitute butter with olive oil or vegan butter and use vegetable broth.
